About me

My name is Niina Vuolajärvi (MA, MSSc). I am originally from Finland but have been living in New York for the last years. I am working on my doctoral dissertation at Rutgers University (USA) at the Department of Sociology. My supervisor is professor Arlene Stein.

I have written about sex work since 2010 when I did a study with Thai massage parlor workers at Pro-Tukipiste Finland. Since then I have conducted research with sex workers in Finland, Sweden, and 29249613_10156115245632557_2740468634139754496_nNorway.

In my current research, I am interested in how criminalizing the client and regulation around commercial sex and migration affect the working conditions of sex workers.

For my research, I have worked in cooperation in Finland in cooperation with Pro Tukipiste in Finland and  Pro Sentret, Nadheim, and Marita Women in Norway.

So far I have talked to over 190 persons from people who sell sex to social and health care workers, officials and the police. Currently, I am looking to talk with people who have experience in selling sex in Sweden to understand the situation in Sweden.

I hope this work helps to change people’s understanding of sex work and it makers, as well as have a positive effect on prostitution policies. Hope you can help me with this!
